Film Festival
Refocusing the Lens
Magnum Photos is hosting its second film festival in the UK, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London from June 24 – June 30.
The festival offers an exploration of the photo agency's extensive 76-year archive through five film screenings and accompanying discussions. Each screening zooms in on critical issues surrounding ethics, underrepresentation, and the complex dynamics of positionality that exist behind the lens.
The program takes a critical and introspective look at the multifaceted role of photojournalism and the profound urge it embodies to document global issues. The curation which is anomalous in status, examining and convessing between "inside" and "outside" gaze, offers an interrogation of the act of observing in cinematic and photographic production.
The festival showcases work by four Magnum photographers made in five locations: Susan Meiselas in Nicaragua, Sohrab Hura in India, Emin Özmen in Turkey, and Newsha Tavakolian in Iran. Each will be shown alongside works by a wide range of filmmakers to offer either a concurrent or contrary view of the topics at display.
